Lighting Design for Theatre and Dance: Virtual Workshop

Group Sessions Available: Mondays & Wednesdays, 4:00–5:00 PM (CT) An introductory workshop in lighting design for theatre and dance. Students explore how lighting shapes mood, movement, and storytelling through core principles such as color, angle, intensity, focus, and composition. Through guided activities and creative design challenges, students learn how lighting designers make artistic choices that support performers and bring stories to life on stage. The workshop includes hands-on experience using a free virtual lighting design simulator, allowing students to experiment with creating and adjusting their own lighting looks in a fun and accessible environment. In addition to introducing students to the world of technical theatre, this workshop encourages creativity, visual storytelling, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Students develop an understanding of how artistic and technical elements work together to communicate ideas, build atmosphere, and engage an audience. Perfect for students interested in theatre, dance, visual arts, storytelling, design, or backstage production work. No prior experience is required. Image Credits: Ian Murphy
