Hello, I'm Dr. Bere Carrera.

Hi! I’m Dr. Berenice Carrera, an Ecuadorian mezzo-soprano, performer, and voice teacher. My professional foundation is in classical and operatic singing, complemented by experience in musical theatre, jazz, pop, Latin American repertoire, and other contemporary commercial styles. I love helping students explore the music that inspires them while developing a healthy, expressive, and authentic voice. I hold a Doctor of Musical Arts and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Louisiana State University, where I also completed a doctoral minor in Voice Pedagogy. I earned my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Colorado Boulder and continue to expand my knowledge through studies in vocology. My classical and lyric experience includes opera, art song, chamber music, and symphonic repertoire. I have performed as the alto soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and portrayed roles in La Casa de Bernarda Alba, Cendrillon, Così fan tutte, Gianni Schicchi, Giulio Cesare in Egitto, Lucia di Lammermoor, Béatrice et Bénédict, Orphée, and the Ecuadorian opera San Antonio, ¡de cabeza! I have performed with Eklund Opera, the Turner-Fischer Center for Opera, and Opera in the Ozarks, as well as in numerous recitals and classical concerts in the United States and Ecuador. Alongside my lyric training, I have developed experience in commercial music. I began my university studies in Vocal Jazz Performance at Universidad San Francisco de Quito and later expanded my performance and teaching work to include pop, musical theatre, and contemporary repertoire. My stage experience includes performing Anita in West Side Story. As a voice teacher at Grace Notes School of Music, Center Stage Performing Arts Academy, and Kids’ Orchestra, I worked with children and teenagers on classical and contemporary repertoire, musical theatre, interpretation, audition preparation, and stage presence. At Louisiana State University, I taught undergraduate voice students and served as the instructor of record for Diction for Singers. I enjoy working with complete beginners, experienced performers, and students with diverse learning needs, including neurodivergent students and students with visual impairments. My lessons combine creativity and artistic expression with evidence-based knowledge of vocal technique, anatomy, physiology, acoustics, and vocal health. For classical singers, we may explore breath coordination, resonance, registration, legato, diction, language, repertoire, and stylistic interpretation. In commercial styles, we may work on storytelling, phrasing, vocal color, stylistic flexibility, microphone-friendly singing, and the technical differences among pop, jazz, and musical theatre. Because every voice is unique, I create a personalized curriculum based on each student’s abilities, age, experience level, learning style, musical interests, and goals. I believe singing is about much more than learning notes or trying to sound “perfect.” It is a rewarding process that can help you express yourself, build confidence, explore your creativity, and get to know yourself better. Vocal development takes time, patience, and consistent practice, and I will be there to encourage you and celebrate every step of your progress.
