Color Wheel Mastery: Color Mixing & All the Things

This is the 1st of the "Foundamentals of Art" series In this engaging, hands-on color theory project, students will discover that an endless world of color begins with just five paint colors: red, yellow, blue, white, and black. Through experimentation and guided instruction, they will learn how artists have mixed and created virtually every imaginable color for centuries. Throughout this project, students will: * Identify and understand the three primary colors. * Mix the primary colors to create the three secondary colors. * Blend primary and secondary colors to produce the six tertiary (intermediate) colors, completing a traditional 12-color wheel. * Learn the relationships between warm and cool colors and how they influence mood and design. * Discover how to create tints by adding white to make colors lighter and softer. * Explore how to create shades by adding black to make colors darker and richer. * Experiment with color intensity and value to create depth, dimension, and realistic effects. * Gain confidence in mixing custom colors instead of relying on pre-made paints. * Strengthen observation, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills while making artistic decisions. * Develop a solid foundation in color theory that can be applied to painting, drawing, graphic design, illustration, crafts, and many other creative disciplines. By the end of this project, students will understand that with only red, yellow, blue, white, and black, they have the tools to mix hundreds of beautiful colors. They’ll leave with a completed color wheel, a deeper appreciation for the science and artistry of color, and the confidence to create original works using their own custom color palettes. This project builds the essential color knowledge every artist needs while encouraging curiosity, experimentation, and creative expression.
