Adaptive Music Personalized Class
This is a personalized music class specifically designed for students who have disabilities. Many children with disabilities are drawn to music due to the nature of how music works. In an adaptive music class, students are able to learn music in a way that is specific to their needs. The goals in adaptive music are simple and done one at a time. Examples are "I can keep a beat", "I can vocalize a melody", "I can make loud and soft sounds", etc. All of these goals are tailored to the students with their disabilities in mind. This is different from music therapy in that students will be learning to reach music goals in a more performance driven format.
Experience subject
I have been a public school music teacher who has taught classes of all special needs students, and classes that have had students with disabilities included. Using adaptive music strategies, I have been able to make a way for all my students to learn music and make progress in music education. I have also taught multiple students with autism, ADHD, down syndrome, and other cognitive disorders in a one on one format. This has allowed me to find the strategies that were effective. On a personal note, my daughter has a cognitive disorder and is considered non-verbal, but that doesn't stop her from vocalizing her favorite songs. This class will help students with disabilities connect with music in a meaningful way.
