Stage Makeup Fundamentals: From Stage to Screen
Whether you're stepping onto a stage for the first time or looking to build a strong foundation in theatrical makeup, this course teaches the essential skills needed to create polished, performance-ready looks. Students will learn that stage makeup is not simply about beauty. It is about creating and enhancing features so performers can be seen clearly under demanding lighting conditions and from a distance while maintaining a natural and intentional appearance. This class explores the fundamental principles of highlighting, contouring, defining, and shaping the face while examining the differences in masculine and feminine facial structures and how makeup techniques can accentuate, soften, or transform those features. Students will develop an understanding of facial anatomy and learn that every face presents its own unique challenges and opportunities. Rather than relying on cookie-cutter applications, participants will learn how to analyze individual facial structures and adapt techniques to best enhance each performer. A major focus of this course is understanding the relationship between stage and camera makeup. While many foundational techniques remain the same, the demands of theatrical lighting, audience distance, photography, and modern cameras require different approaches to application, color selection, texture, and intensity. Students will be guided through complete makeup looks and learn how to adjust each one for both live performance and on-camera work. Through demonstrations and practical application, participants will gain an understanding of how lighting, lens proximity, and resolution affect the final appearance of makeup and how professionals modify their techniques accordingly. In addition to application skills, students will gain practical industry knowledge on selecting products that can withstand long hours, bright performance lighting, perspiration, costume changes, high-definition cameras, and the rigorous demands of professional entertainment. The course includes an in-depth overview of the major makeup systems used throughout theatre, film, themed entertainment, live events, and special effects work, including grease paint, alcohol-based products, airbrush systems, cream foundations, and water-based formulations. Students will learn the strengths, weaknesses, and ideal applications of each medium, as well as how to evaluate products based on their own skin type, performance environment, budget, and professional goals. The instructor will discuss the products used throughout the course and explain the reasoning behind those selections, helping students build a practical and reliable makeup kit that serves their individual needs.
