Creative Writing: Writing about place

Writing about place offers an invitation to notice and discover an environment's unique features. In noticing certain sensorial details, whole worlds can be built—real and imagined. These details can also be summoned from memory after taking a trip, vacation, or attending an event. By paying close attention to what's in a room, a house, a street or a neighborhood, a student can enliven a description with the stuff of life—sights, sounds, smells, tastes, textures, and feelings that stem from taking things in. Depending on the student's age, we will do different exercises to explore a sense of place and world building to create a story where the environment plays a key role. Guided exercises explore: * Sensory details to describe a place * Place as a mirror for our emotions and mood * Mindful breathing and observation * Memory * Cultural context of a place * Possible definitions of "place" * Impressions of a place * A sense of belonging to a place * Different perspectives of a place, according to the point of view (POV) Class requirements: * A notebook with a pencil or pen * Curiosity
