Writing about place offers an invitation to notice and discover an environment's unique features. In noticing certain sensorial details, whole worlds can be built—real and imagined. These details can also be summoned from memory after taking a trip, vacation, or attending an event. By paying close attention to what's in a room, a house, a street or a neighborhood, a student can enliven a description with the stuff of life—sights, sounds, smells, tastes, textures, and feelings that stem from taking things in. Depending on the student's age, we will do different exercises to explore a sense of place and world building to create a story where the environment plays a key role.
