Scriptwriting for Stage or Screen

We will start with the basics of formatting for screenplays or stage plays, and develop weekly lessons based on the foundations of storytelling, character development, and what makes this form of visual writing a bit different than fiction. You will have the opportunity to examine existing scripts to see: - How dialogue is functioning and the strength of subtext - How stage directions translate from page to stage/screen - How and why we connect to characters - What makes a compelling story? These criteria will also be applied to your own work, which will be developed weekly during our seminars. What you want to create is up to you! If you're currently working on a film or play, let's revise and develop! If you're just getting started, we can work on mini-plays and films that can potentially serve as the foundation for a larger project. Seminars are offered for 1 or 1.5 hours. If you are someone who needs a bit more time to think and process, or would like to write during your seminar, 1.5 hours is a great option! Ultimately, we will choose how to spend your time in a way that is most constructive and beneficial to you and your craft.

Experience subject

Playwriting and screenwriting is an exciting endeavor. The visuals of an actor, scenery, and lighting add an extra layer of depth and open up new opportunities for collaboration based on a director or actor's interpretation of your work. Sounds a bit daunting to put your work in someone else's hands? It can be, but that's what makes this form of writing so powerful. Your words have meaning, and the stories you tell to an audience have the power to spark insightful conversation and invoke new ways of thinking.
