Introduction to Concept Development

When I think about concept development, I don’t think about structure first, but I think about understanding. A lot of people are taught to jump straight into writing, plotting, or building something “complete,” but that’s not how I approach storytelling. Before anything becomes a script, a film, or a series, it starts as a feeling… a question… a moment that doesn’t fully make sense yet. This class is about learning how to sit with that. Introduction to Concept Development is how I guide creatives through the beginning stages of an idea before it’s polished, before it’s perfect, before it’s even fully clear. I focus on helping you recognize what your idea actually is, what it’s trying to say, and how to start shaping it into something real. We’ll explore how ideas are formed, how to build a strong concept, how to create a world that feels lived in, and how to begin translating that into something you can develop further. But more importantly, I’m teaching you how to think like a creator and not just how to follow steps. This isn’t about forcing an idea into a format. It’s about learning how to listen to it, understand it, and build from there. By the end of this class, you won’t just have an idea, but you’ll have a foundation. A way of approaching storytelling that you can return to every time something new finds you. This is where your concepts begin.
